Switzerland

Switzerland is not in the EU, so there is no EU Blue Card here. For people from outside the EU/EFTA, access to the Swiss labour market is limited:

  • Only qualified workers are admitted – managers, specialists or university graduates, usually with several years of professional experience.
  • Permits are subject to annual quotas, and your employer must show that hiring you is in Switzerland’s economic interest and that no suitable person could be found in Switzerland or in the EU/EFTA.
  • Graduates of Swiss universities get six months after finishing their studies to look for a job that matches their qualification. If the job is of overriding scientific or economic interest, they can be admitted without the priority rule for Swiss and EU/EFTA workers.

Details are on the website of the State Secretariat for Migration: sem.admin.ch, and on the federal portal ch.ch.
