Latvia

Country: Latvia

Latvia’s statutory minimum wage is €780 a month in 2026, and overtime is paid with a bonus of at least 100%. 78.2% of people aged 20–64 have a job, more than the EU average. Employers look especially for ICT specialists, engineers, construction and metal trades workers and health professionals – and for most jobs you need Latvian.

Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland have free access to the Latvian labour market, just like Latvians.

  • Student and holiday jobs are normal employment: you sign a written contract, and the minimum wage, working-time and paid-leave rules apply.
  • Age limits: you can work from the age of 15; people under 18 need a medical examination before they start.
  • Internships: Latvia has no formal legal definition of a “traineeship”, so check before you start whether you will have an employment contract, pay and insurance. If you are studying in another EU country, an Erasmus+ traineeship grant can cover travel and living costs.

Students from outside the EU may work up to 20 hours a week during their studies and up to 40 hours a week during study holidays.
