5. Cover letter and application: how to stand out

Follow exactly the application procedure in the advert: CV and cover letter, an online form or a test. One page of cover letter, written for this employer, in the language of the advert – and keep a list of where you have applied.

Read the advert twice

Employers decide quickly. Send exactly what the advert asks for – CV and cover letter, an online application form, certificates or a portfolio – by the deadline and in the requested format. An application that ignores the instructions is often the first to be rejected.

The cover letter in one page

  • Address a person where you can – find out who recruits (the HR manager or the head of the department).
  • First paragraph: which job you are applying for and why this company.
  • Middle: two or three examples that prove you have what they are looking for – from studies, student jobs, projects or volunteering.
  • End: say you are available for an interview (also online) and when you can start.
  • Write it for this employer – a letter that could go to any company convinces nobody.

Speculative applications

No vacancy advertised? You can still send a short speculative application to companies you would like to work for – it is common in many countries, especially for internships.

Keep track

Write down where and when you applied, the job reference and the contact person. When an employer calls back weeks later, you will know which offer it is about.
