Recruiters look you up online – often before they invite you. Keep your professional profile up to date and consistent with your CV, check what public posts say about you and use networks to follow employers and get in touch with people in your field.

Your professional profile

  • Same facts as your CV – dates, job titles and education should match.
  • A clear headline – what you study or do and what job you are looking for (“Civil engineering graduate looking for a site engineer job in Germany”).
  • A neutral, friendly photo on professional networks, even if you do not put one on your CV.
  • In English and in the local language if you are targeting a specific country.
  • Show your work: projects, a portfolio or a GitHub profile where it fits your field.

Check what others see

Search for your own name. Make private what you would not want an employer to see, and keep public posts polite – what you write in comments can be read by a future employer too.

Use networks to find jobs

  • Follow companies you would like to work for – many announce vacancies and recruitment events there first.
  • Contact alumni of your university who work in the country or company that interests you – a short, polite question often gets an answer.
  • Follow EURES and the public employment services of the country you are targeting for job days and online events.

Protect your data

Do not publish your ID number, home address or bank details. Be careful with “recruiters” who write to you first with an offer that seems too good – how to spot a job scam »
